This video describes the difference between being neutral and being fair. Often these two terms are confused by people who think that they are the same. Dr. Hanna explains that neutrality is not what you think about yourself - rather - it is what others think of your neutrality. In other words, a mediator may consider himself or herself to be fair and even-handed with the parties - but - if the parties do not feel similarly, then the mediator's opinion of his or her own "fairness" is irrelevant - and the mediator will need to address this perception and resolve it or the mediation may not succeed.
